Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus

Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus

Earlier this year, Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) helped establish the Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus.  The group currently has nearly 70 members all of which are Republican with the exception of Representative Mike McIntyre (D-NC).  The caucus supports the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment which would require the President of the United States to submit to Congress a balanced budget each fiscal year.

Of course, there is room for waivers which would require a three-fifths vote from each chamber.  Additionally, passage of a debt ceiling increase would require the same three-fifths vote.  In a Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget post, Representative Coffman was quoted saying, “…the amendment would ‘force us to make the tough decisions’ regarding budget priorities, such debate over priorities is currently lacking in Congress.”
