Reid: This is Not the Way to Legislate

A Washington Post article reports Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has successfully pushed for a measure to change long-standing U.S. Senate rules.  No longer will the minority party be allowed to “force votes on amendments.”  In recent days, Senate Republicans have been discussing the option of forcing a vote on President Obama’s jobs plan.  Senate Republicans know the measure will fail and many close to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) say it would be to embarrass the White House and prove there is no support for the measure in the Democrat-controlled Senate.  Senator Reid told colleagues, “I feel very comfortable with what I’ve done.”

The Washington Post article goes on to say, “Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, who had worked on the 1995 compromise that headed off the nuclear option for judicial filibusters, was pleading with Mr. Reid and other Democrats in the well of the chamber, while other senators streamed in to vote.  Many seemed uncertain what they were doing, and several spent time going over the matter with the parliamentarian.”
