Cantor Optimistic Deal Can Be Reached

A Fox News article reports that U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) struck an optimistic tone today regarding the possibility of an agreement being reached by the “super committee”.  He told reporters he understands the enormous pressure the committee is facing to find $1.2 trillion in cuts over the next ten years; however, he said, “I believe they will reach an agreement by the deadline.”

For weeks, the committee has been struggling to meet a balanced approach with both substantial cuts paired with new tax revenues.  If the committee cannot reach a deal, automatic cuts, or a sequester, will begin which will hit the U.S. Defense Department hardest.  Majority Leader Cantor told reporters, “I don’t think the sequester will be applicable.  I’m confident they will get a deal.”

If an agreement is reached in time, it will be given an up-or-down vote by the full Congress.  This vote will have to take place before a December 23rd deadline.
