Buckeye State Strategy: National Debt

It looks increasingly like the results of the national election will hinge on Ohio.  That’s why the Ohio state GOP is stressing the national debt, the one issue where they have a big advantage over the Democrats, reports Erin McPike of RealClearPolitics.

Massive amounts of money, mostly on mailers, have been spent by the Buckeye State GOP in order to link Obama to the nation’s rising national debt.  Only a few of these mailers feature the Romney/Ryan ticket.  Most of them focus on the President and the Democrats in Congress.

Given that the Ohio economy is improving at a more rapid pace than the nation’s, talking about the nation’s economic decline is less effective here.  Instead, the national debt is the main issue.  A Republican piece encouraging Ohioans to cast their votes early does not feature any candidate.  It simply says, “Deny the Democrats four more years of wasteful spending … The Democrats promised to cut the deficit.  They failed.”

An average of the polls shows Obama leading Romney in the state by a small margin of 1.9 percentage points.
