National Sequester Day

As we name today ‘Sequester Day’ and across-the-board spending cuts will be taken into effect, we can’t help but note the lack of urgency as President Obama meets with congressional leaders at the White House. In fact, Washington hasn’t even really given us the showdown we were hoping for, leading us to conclude that the plently of folks, both Republican and Democrat, are willing to see these cuts take place. Not to mention the extremely mixed messages the GOP is sending: some in the party are denouncing the cuts, while others stand behind President Obama, cheering him on. So what is it that we really want?

GOP Rep. Steve Scalise told the New York Times, “I think Friday will be an important day that shows we’re finally willing to stand and fight for conservative principles and force Washington to start living within its means…and that will be a big victory.” What would be an even bigger victory? Discovering some sort of common ground.
