Nightmare – The Label Unions Have Assigned to the New Health Care Law
On July 18, 2013 three of our nation’s largest Unions sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi with a strong message regarding Obamacare.  Their message simply stated that the new legislation under the Affordable Health Care Act would “shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40-hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.”  Unions seem to finally recognize and endorse what their Republican counterparts have been saying all along.  The excerpt below, taken verbatim from the letter, reads as if it were taken directly from Republican talking points.
“When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Health Care Act, you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them.  Sadly, that promise is under threat.”  The Unions acknowledged the deleterious implications of this legislation when they asserted that “the unintended consequences of the ACA are severe.  Perverse incentives will certainly cause nightmare scenarios.  First, the law creates an incentive for employers to maintain employees’ work hours below 30-hours per week.  Numerous employers have begun to limit workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly.  This impact is two-fold –  fewer hours with less pay and loss of current health benefits.”
The fundamental question that now remains is what will the President’s administration do now?
