Aetna Provides Obamacare Force-Out Scenario
In a recent CNBC interview, Mark Bertolini, CEO of Aetna, alluded to a scenario whereby the insurance giant could be forced out of the Obamacare program.  Clearly, the power to set reasonable policy rates that attract participants is key to this insurer’s ability to remain a viable Obamacare participant.  Bertolini couched the dilemma in the form of a question – “Are they going to be double-digit [increases] or are we going to get beat up because they’re double-digit or are we just going to have to pull out of the program?”
Referencing the slow start to the program and pointing out that many of the uninsured have not yet enrolled, Bertolini emphasized that there are still many uncertainties.  Even with the many unknowns, he was firm in his assessment of the program’s current impact on the uninsured population –  “We see only 11 percent of the population is actually people that were firmly uninsured that are now insured. So [it] didn’t really eat into the uninsured population.”
