Do The Swiss Know More Than Americans?

Sunday, voters in Switzerland chose to keep their medical care private rather than switching to a single-payer system. According to Yahoo News, the “referendum results showed that almost 62 percent of voters had shot down a reform pushed by left-leaning parties which say the current private system is busting the budgets of ordinary residents.” The current system has served as a prototype for President Obama’s plan. In turn, much of the health care debate in the United States mirrors that in Switzerland. Yahoo News notes that Switzerland’s current health care system “has proven its mettle and is debt-free, unlike the health services of France, Italy or Britain” and goes on to explain that proponents of the current system insist “higher premiums are inevitable given an ageing population and costly cutting-edge medical care, and say shifting to a public system would generate few savings.”
