Hong Kong Fights For Democracy While America Steers Away From It

Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Hong Kong to voice disapproval of recent Chinese demands to vet candidates before the 2017 elections. While the protests have garnered much support from outside nations, millions are still holding their breath to see how China will respond. According to the U.K. Daily Mail, “in China, an editorial in People’s Daily warned of ‘unimaginable consequences’ if the protests continued, while state TV said Hong Kong’s police should be supported in their attempts to ‘restore the social order as soon as possible.’”

Ironically, as Hong Kong fights for the basic rights of democracy, America’s President continues to issue executive orders at record speed. Perhaps Americans can take a lesson from their Hong Kong counterparts who are primarily peacefully but resolutely demanding that the will of the people prevail over the strong arm of the government.
