The Veruca Salt Effect: The American Government’s Need To Consume And Spend

As the government continues to rake in record amounts of revenue, cnsnews.com reports that those amounts will not circumscribe the opprobrious spending currently authorized by our federal government. The article states, “the U.S. Treasury has been forced to issue $1,040,965,000,000 in new debt since fiscal 2015 started” while “record $341,591,000,000 in revenues was not enough to finance ongoing government spending let alone pay off old debt that matured.”

With the widening gap between revenues collected and expenditure obligations, government should take the hint that obsessive consumption does not lead the way to economic prosperity. As Veruca Salt learned in the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the exercise of greed generally leads to undesirable endings. There is no reason to believe that fate holds a different lesson for the United States government.
