Trump Administration’s Push to Revamp Nafta Faces a Divided Congress

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer sent a letter to congress Thursday informing them that the administration would begin talks to renegotiate NAFTA within the next 90 days. Both sides agree the trade agreement could use updating, however, many are also concerned that a major overhaul might could spell economic trouble for those that benefitted from duty-free exports to Canada and Mexico. Renegotiating NAFTA was a central campaign promise of Donald Trump, and Canada and Mexico have emphasized that the talks need to be in a trilateral manner.
