Why earnings are so outstanding even though the economy is barely growing

There has been a recent discrepancy between overall U.S. economic data and the earnings of certain American corporations. S&P 500 companies that do more than 50% of their business overseas saw an average growth of 19.9% in first quarter earnings. That is double the growth of companies who do the majority of their business here in the United States. GDP growth in the first quarter was a lackluster .7%. It appears that the more business a company conducts overseas, the better they do on the balance sheet.
