In a Fox News article, several Republicans and officials at the Pentagon are reported to have reaffirmed the deficit “super committee’s” necessity to find the over one trillion dollars in cuts they were tasked with this summer. Republicans and Pentagon officials have said if the committee fails, the cuts will automatically come from defense spending. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) asked, “If we pulled that trigger, would we be shooting ourselves in the foot?” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta responded, “We’d be shooting ourselves in the head.” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) has warned members of Congress that if the Pentagon is hit with drastic cuts, the country may have to reintroduce the draft.
