According to a recent Financial Times article, this year the United States will lose to China its privilege to boast the largest economy. The US has held this coveted title since usurping the UK’s hold on it in 1842. The ICP, International Comparison Program, explains this disappointing displacement by noting, “money goes further in poorer countries than it previously thought, prompting it to increase the relative size of emerging marketeconomies,” thus cementing China’s rise as the world’s largest economy. Once again, Americans find themselves scratching their heads in perplexity and anxiety as they try to discern how their government could allow America to once again lose another prized position.
