National Debt Exceeds $18 Trillion

While eyes are focused on how well shoppers will bolster the economy with holiday spending, this seasonal impact, while important, merits little attention compared to the calamitous prospects of a national budget that exceeds the $18 trillion mark. The attainment of these gifts – freedom, prosperity, the rule of law, etc. – comes at a high price. This price should be paid with human self-restraint, frugality and commitment to the time-honored traditions of ingenuity and hard work, not with stretching the national debt beyond the nation’s conceivable capacity to honor it. Let’s hope that, in the new year, we find our government developing legislation that will promote the will and abilities of Americans to pay the right kind of price for the inestimable gifts our society continues to afford its members.
