Despite predictions of lowering traffic in emergency rooms after the adoption of the Affordable Care Act, emergency room visits have continued to increase. 16 million previously uninsured Americans now have health coverage and instead of pulling back on emergency room care, the Affordable Care Act allows people to obtain a plan that will pay for the visits that keep them from having to pay their entire medical bill. The numbers are contradicting the purpose of the Affordable Care Act – more people are visiting the emergency room rather than primary care physicians because of affordability under the act.
