April 2015 set a record for the lowest labor force participation for women ranging in age from 16 years old and over since September 1988. The new statistics show that 56,167,000 women were not in the labor force in April. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in order to be classified as “not in the labor force,” an individual must not currently have a job or have looked for employment in the past four weeks. Since March 2015, a staggering 36,000 women have dropped out of the labor force.
