Trump’s new problem: Americans aren’t shopping

The fact of the matter is that Americans are not buying things as often as they used to. There has been significant evidence to show that the business community and small business owners are optimistic about the Trump Administration and their proposed changes that influence a company’s bottom-line. However, much of that optimism has not carried over into consumer spending. In February and March, retail sales continued to decline from previous months when they were already rather low. Roughly 70% of the American economy comes from people buying stuff, and that remains a slow moving facet of our economy. Experts believe that consumers are “skeptically optimistic” about the economy improving, but not hopeful enough to alter their spending behavior just yet.
