Lawmakers Must Join Hands to Deliver Paid Family and Medical Leave

Americans for a Balanced Budget commends the creation of a bipartisan group supporting national paid family and medical leave.

Raleigh, North Carolina – December 8, 2022 – Following Americans for a Balanced Budget’s (ABB) announcement in support of a common sense paid family leave policy, ABB commends the formation of a bipartisan Congressional working group that is putting policy above politics by advancing a national paid family and medical leave program. The group is spearheaded by Reps. Stephanie Bice (R-OK-05) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-06) but also includes Republican members Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-LA-02)
and Julia Letlow (R-LA-05.).

ABB has called for this kind of bipartisan approach in anticipation of the slim margins that will define the 118 th Congress. “Both parties have an interest in seeing this policy implemented,” explains ABB President Dee Stewart. “National paid family and medical leave is widely supported by voters, and with the makeup of the new Congress, it is both reassuring and exciting to see this bipartisan group of
Representatives take the initiative to make sure Congress can create a well thought out and sensible policy that benefits all Americans.”

A recent poll commissioned by ABB with Public Opinion Strategies found that eighty-four percent of North Carolina voters are in favor of national paid family leave. With public backing and bipartisan momentum, Republicans must not pass up this chance to craft a popular, paid-for policy that would deliver material benefits for working families.
