Federal Spending Is
out of control

ABB is leading the fight for
fiscal sanity in our Nation’s Capitol

Originally in operation during the 1980s and 1990s, Americans for a Balanced Budget (ABB) was re-founded in 2009 in response to the reckless fiscal policies of the big-spending, out-of-control politicians in Washington, D.C. With the national debt soaring past 36 Trillion Dollars, it is clear to millions of Americans that this massive debt is our greatest national security risk in the 21st Century.

Conservatives are leading the way toward a stronger and more prosperous America. ABB is on the front lines, standing up for timeless principles and sensible priorities to make our nation the very best it can be.

Polling Indicates Widespread, Bipartisan Support for SNAP and Medicaid Programs

Poll shows that Republican voters oppose proposals like work requirements that put mothers, veterans, and caregivers at risk.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – New polling conducted by The Tarrance Group, surveying national and congressional district-level voters, reveals widespread support among Republican voters for protecting Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As Congress weighs reconciliation and potential changes to safety net programs, this data sends a clear warning to lawmakers considering new work requirements or funding cuts.

Contrary to recent political rhetoric, GOP voters themselves support maintaining or increasing funding for both Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These voters are also far more concerned about reducing waste, fraud, and abuse than imposing new red tape that could harm children, military families, seniors, and caregivers.

Key findings include:
• Nationally, 82% of voters — including majorities of Republicans — support protecting or expanding these programs, rather than cutting them. Roughly 70% of Republican primary voters in Missouri’s 8th District and 79% of Republican voters in Pennsylvania’s 1st District support maintaining or increasing funding for SNAP and Medicaid.
• Belief that these programs are a critical safety net, especially for children and our military families, registers at or above 85% nationally, in the 1st District of Pennsylvania, as well as among Republicans in the 8th District of Missouri.
• In both Pennsylvania’s 1st District and Missouri’s 8th, majorities say it’s wrong to take SNAP benefits away from single moms or caregivers who can’t meet strict new work requirements.

Majority of voters consistently say the federal focus should be on reducing waste, fraud, and abuse — not punishing those in need with new barriers.

“These numbers don’t lie: even in solid Republican districts, voters want Congress to protect SNAP and Medicaid,” said Dee Stewart, President of Americans for a Balanced Budget (ABB). “This isn’t just a moral issue — it’s a political one. GOP lawmakers who push harsh work requirements are out of step with their own base.”

Americans for a Balanced Budget is calling on lawmakers to listen to their voters and reject any proposals that would add burdensome work requirements or shift SNAP funding to states’ programs.

The national survey was conducted via an online panel from April 22-24th, among n=1,000 voters in the country (+/- 3.1% margin of error), with an oversample of n=300 voters in households with annual incomes under $60,000 a year. The survey of all voters in Pennsylvania CD 1 and among Republicans in Missouri CD 8 was conducted via live-caller and texts from May 6-8, among N=300 respondents in each district (+/- 5.8% margin of error).

Trump’s Plans To “Make America Healthy Again” Advances Thanks to Senator Bill Cassidy

February 6, 2025

Thanks to a key vote from Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, President Trump’s plan to “Make America Healthy Again” has cleared its biggest hurdle. Cassidy’s “yes” vote on HHS Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. secured his confirmation’s passage out of the Senate Finance Committee to the full Senate floor. This confirmation is a critical step toward implementing a fiscally responsible healthcare agenda—one that prioritizes efficiency, cost-cutting, and reducing government waste.

In his first few weeks in office, President Trump has already made great strides in advancing his “America First” priorities. Instrumental in enacting his vision for America’s future is the placement of his appointees at the head of the agencies tasked with creating policies and overseeing the administration of the law. Confirmation of key positions, like the Secretaries of the Interior, Transportation, and Homeland Security, have already taken place, but there are many outstanding cabinet positions waiting to be filled. In the case of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, Americans are anxiously awaiting the beginning of a new era of smarter, more cost-effective healthcare policy.

In a statement on X right before the vote, Cassidy announced his support for Kennedy’s confirmation. He stated that he had conversations with Kennedy and the White House that solidified his decision to vote in the affirmative. He also specifically referenced Vice President Vance’s counsel, thanking him for the help he provided him as he made his decision. Cassidy’s support for Trump’s nominee and his collaboration with the administration reflect a commitment to ensuring HHS is led by someone who will prioritize fiscal responsibility and the efficient use of taxpayer dollars.

Moreover, Cassidy stated that, if confirmed, he plans to have an “unprecedentedly close relationship” with Kennedy, in which they would speak “multiple times a month.” This further demonstrates the collaborative nature of this era of leadership and ensures that healthcare policy decisions will be made with both patient outcomes and cost-conscious reforms in mind.

Cassidy’s vote for RFK Jr. to lead HHS proved to be vital in advancing not only this nomination but also, on a larger scale, President Trump’s healthcare agenda to lower costs and rein in unnecessary spending. With a focus on reducing taxpayer burdens and promoting market-driven healthcare solutions, the administration aims to address the root causes of America’s health challenges, ultimately benefiting both patients and the national budget. Republican lawmakers’ support for Kennedy and their willingness to work closely with the administration signal a promising next four years dedicated to fiscally sound policies that strengthen healthcare in America.

At the end of the event, Cassidy took questions from Louisianans in the audience, addressing concerns about alternative plans to shore up Social Security and rallying around the good news on the Social Security Fairness Act. Throughout the event, Cassidy underscored his commitment to protecting America’s values and promises through fiscally sound policy proposals.
